SARA A. SWARTZ

Sara A. Swartz,  90, of Carlisle and formerly of Newville, died  Friday, February 27, 2014  at Chapel Pointe, Carlisle.

Born September 30, 1923 in Newville, she was a daughter of the late Earl E. and Stella M. (Moffitt) Swartz.

Miss Swartz was a graduate of Newville High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree from Elizabethtown College and her Master’s Degree from Peabody University.  She was a Kindergarten teacher for the South Middleton School District for over 30 years and was a lifetime member of the PSEA.

She was a member of the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren, where she had been active as a Sunday School teacher, leader, former Board chair, Deacon and organist for many years. She was a well thought of and respected church woman.

Miss Swartz was the first Director of Camp Eder, Fairfield, Pa and had served as a counselor at Camp Swatara. She served on The Southern Pennsylvania District Board of the Church of the Brethren. She was also elected to serve on the Denomination’s Standing Committee. She also had a longtime involvement with the Church of the Brethren Children’s Aid Society.

During her teaching career, she took a sabbatical trip to Africa where she taught at the Church of the Brethren School in Jos, Nigeria and also completed  mission trips to Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

She was preceded in death by a sister:  Aileen McCullough.

Surviving are a sister: Loree Swartz of Carlisle; two brothers:  Robert Swartz (and wife Jean) of Carlisle; Ray Swartz (and wife Fay) of Hanover; brother in law:  Tom McCullough of Newville; 10 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews and nine great great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Friday, March 7, 2014  at the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren, 170 Church Road, Carlisle, Pa  with the Rev. Jan Custer, her pastor, and Rev. Walt Frankenberry, officiating.  Burial will be private in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9:30 A. M. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren, 170 Church Road, Carlisle, Pa 17015 or the Children’s Aid Society, 343 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, Pa 17350.
