MERLE R. WITTER

Merle R. Witter, 80, of Mechanicsburg. passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

Born April 27, 1943 in Carlisle, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Garman) Witter and was one of 15 children born to that marriage.

He was the former proprietor of Stan’s Beverage, Carlisle, where he worked for over 29 years. 

Merle was a 1961 graduate of Cumberland Valley High School and then proudly served his country in the U S Air Force.  He was a longtime member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Boiling Springs.

He was a lifetime member of the Orlando Newcomer VFW Post 477 in Carlisle and the Mechanicsburg American Legion Post 109.  He also held memberships in the Carlisle Eagles Aerie #1299 and the Carlisle Moose Lodge #761.  Merle was an avid Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles fan and loved spending time in the woods and dearly loved his grand dogs.

Merle was preceded in death by his siblings: Mary Barrick, Alma Quigley, Cecil Baer, Betty Nelson, Esther Darnell, Martha Neff, Grace Rufe, Virginia Dewalt, Judy Witter, George Witter, Wayne Witter and Helen Witter.

 Surviving are his wife:  Constance “Connie” (Boyle) Witter, two daughters: Maxine Fry (Guy) of Mechanicsburg and Julia Reed (companion Michael Russell) of Boiling Springs as well as two brothers: Raymond Witter of Tornilla, TX and Charles Witter of Carlisle and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 12 Noon from Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 325 Old Stonehouse Rd, S. with Ken Landis officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Boiling Springs.  A viewing will be held at the church on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until time of service.
