Gary I. Shuey, 73, of Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at home. He was born September 28, 1946 in Ashland, Pa, to Ivan and Isobel (Maurer) Shuey and grew up in Lavelle.
After graduating from Ashland Area High School, Gary received his BA from Bloomsburg University, where he was active in Circle K, serving as the District Governor. He went on to receive a Master of Social Work degree from Marywood University.
Gary’s career in Social Work began at York Co. Children and Youth. While in graduate school he was employed by Lancaster C & Y where he supervised the Adolescent Group Home Program. In 1975, he began working for Cumberland Co. C & Y as the Director of Social Services, and In 1988 became the Administrator of that agency until his retirement in 2007. He greatly enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the C & Y Christmas parties held for the children they served
Gary loved working with and advocating for Children. He served as President of the PA Children and Youth Administrators. And after “flunking retirement” he joined the Dickinson Law Clinic where he worked as the Social Work Supervisor in the Children’s Advocacy Clinic from 2007 through August of 2019. Gary created affiliation arrangements with Millersville, Temple and Shippensburg Universities for graduate level social work students to intern alongside law students, providing interdisciplinary representation of clinic clients. During his 12 years with the Clinic program, Gary held a joint appointment with Hershey Medical Center for a period of time to develop training programs for medical staff on reporting child abuse. He also received a grant from Penn State to work with the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network to assist in developing courses in child protection studies, as well the Fostering Lions program for foster youth who attend Penn State. Gary was very committed to developing a high-quality interdisciplinary approach to education and improvement of the child welfare system.
Gary was a Life Scout and served as the Assistant Scout Master of Troop 189 in Carlisle while his son was involved in scouting. He was also an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg.
Gary is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda (Cook) Shuey; his son, Evan (Ingrid) Shuey of York; a granddaughter, Isabel Shuey. Also, two nephews, Christopher Klecic of Omaha, NE, Kerry Klecic of Milwaukee, WI and two great-nephews, Kyle and Conner Klecic and a sister in law: Coleen Klecic. His greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughter and he was looking forward to the birth of her sister, Arianna, at the end of this month.
