JOHN B. RICE

John B. Rice, 82, of Carlisle was called home by his Lord on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005.

He had been receiving care at Claremont Nursing Home.

John was born March 23, 1923 in Loysville, Pa to John H. and Sarah Brunner Rice.

He graduated from Landisburg Senior High in 1940. John worked at the Enola Yards of the Pennsylvania Railroad until he was called to serve in the 864th Army Engineer Corps in 1943. He served in the Pacific until 1945.

On November 7, 1947 he married Dorothy Crozier of Landisburg . They farmed from 1948 to 1959 outside Loysville. They then moved to Carlisle, where he was employed by Masland’s until retiring in 1984.

During retirement he taught himself to make stained glass and enjoyed participating in local craft shows. He also enjoyed gardening and tending his fruit trees.

He was a member of the Wesleyan Church of the Cross, Carlisle. Additionally he was a member of the North Middleton Senior Citizens and the Landsiburg VFW.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years: Dorothy Crozier Rice; three daughters: Jane Rice (David Martini) of New Hope, Pa; Gloria (Jerry) Stonge of Mechanicsburg and Peggy (Michael) Spellman, of New Cumberland; two sisters: Alliene Bair of New Bloomfield and Grace Clark of Camp Hill ; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005 from the Wesleyan Church of the Cross, 430 B Street, Carlisle, with the Rev. Daniel R. Mikesell officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Restland Cemetery, Loysville. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9-10 am.
