ROBERT S. SMITH

Robert S. Smith, 84, formerly of Carlisle, died Mon. March 24, 2008 in the South East Veterans Center, Spring City, Pa.

He was born Oct. 13, 1923 in Carlisle.

Mr. Smith was a US Army veteran of World War II, having participated in the Normandy invasion, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars and the W.W.II Victory Medal.

He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Carlisle and was a member and past Commander of Haines-Stackfield American Legion Post #826, Carlisle.

Surviving ar four daughters: Mildred Smith of Mechanicsburg, Evangeline A. Caples (and her husband John) of Ward, Arkansas, Melanie C. McCaffrey of Harrisburg and Modenna L. Smith of Arlington,Tx; two sons: Robert H. Smith of Ossining, NY and Benjamin L. Smith of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Sat. March 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Ronan Funeral Home, 255 York Road, Carlisle. The Rev. Delores E. Jones will officiate. Burial, with military honors by the Cumberland County Honor Guard, will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.
