Lewell M. Lively, Jr.

Lewell M. Lively, Jr., affectionately known as Jack Lively, 83, passed away peacefully in his home in Mechanicsburg, PA on Sunday, March 5, 2006.

Jack was born on March 7, 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia where he spent his childhood. During World War II, Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic working on B-24s and B-29s and later as an Engines Operations Instructor. Pursuing his love of aircraft, Jack attended the Georgia Institute of Technology from which he graduated in 1950 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduation, Jack’s fascination took him to Long Beach, California where for 38 years at McDonald Douglas Aircraft Corp. he helped design many air planes, specializing in the design of cargo loading systems. At his retirement in 1989 he was the project manager for the cargo workhorse, the C17 so prominently used by the Army and Air Force today.

Jack and Doris raised their daughter Jacquie and son, Lewell M. Lively, III (Chip) in California. During his years in California, Jack was an active and valuable community member serving in many organizations and holding numerous leadership positions including District Commander of the Long Beach Area of the American Legion, and President of the Orange County, California Pop Warner Football League He was honored with a PTA Lifetime Achievement award for his many years of dedicated service to the community.

After Jack’s retirement, he and his wife Doris returned to Toccoa, Georgia where Jack continued his community service as a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church. Jack’s loving wife of 59 years, Doris Garland Lively, his daughter and son-in-law, Jacquie and Peter LaFata of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and “adopted” daughter Jeanne Lawson were at his side on Sunday when he passed away.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006 from the Ronan Funeral Home, 255 York Road, Carlisle with the Rev. Dan Lehman officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 10-11 a.m.
